Hookworms and roundworms can be harbored by your dog or cat and transmitted to people. Between 30% to 50%of dogs and cats carry gastrointestinal (GI) parasites. Children, the elderly and immunocompromised people are at high risk.
Our dogs get infected with hookworms and roundworms by walking places where other dogs have passed faeces. The microscopic roundworm eggs and hookworm larvae end up on your pet’s feet. Your dog then licks his feet and infects himself. Three weeks later, your dog is shedding eggs and larvae from his GI tract. Cats more commonly become infected by hunting prey, and from laval stages carried in fleas.
How Can You Prevent the Spreading of Parasites to People, especially Children?
Keep your pets on a topical monthly flea and tick treatment all year. Use a combination flea and worm treatmentor a seperate worm tablet every two to three months.
Scoop the lawn where your cat or dog defecates at least weekly, ideally daily, as worm eggs and larvae are found in stools and will contaminate the environment.
Bring your pet’s fresh stool sample to your veterinarian at least yearly. You do not have to bring your pet into the veterinary hospital for this service.
Teach your kids to wash their hands before eating, especially if they just handled their pet.
